The much-anticipated English edition of Adolf Schlatter's influential New Testament Theology that centers in Christ and defends the Gospels' historical truth.
Book DescriptionGospel-informed Christology distinguished one Tubingen scholar. As the subtitle suggests, Adolf Schlatter grounds New Testament theology in the historical Jesus.
Schlatter published "Theologie des Neuen Testaments" in 1909-10. "The History of the Christ" translates half of the second edition (1921-22). The remainder is forthcoming as "Teaching of the Apostles: The Development of New Testament Theology".
Schlatter constructs an historical exegetical description and theology from all four Gospels. In defiance of German theology, "The History of the Christ" champions the Gospels as trustworthy historical accounts.
Peter Stuhlmacher (University of Tubingen): "Theologically, Schlatter was the most important figure in the faculty of Protestant Theology at Tubingen in the first third of the century."
E. Earle Ellis: "He offers probably the most comprehensive alternative to the reconstruction of early Christianity by the 'History of Religions School.'"
D. A. Carson: "Schlatter was a fine Hebraist and was one of the few who could interpret the New Testament against the full panoply of Old Testament and intertestamental sources."
J. Julius Scott: "Evangelical biblical theologians would, I think, be much better off if we could ground our thinking with a better acquaintance with Schlatter."
Klyne Snodgrass: "That Schlatter was a strong voice opposing Bultmann is significant. That he was a pietist and a scholar and willing to argue against both the right and the left is significant."
Stephen Neill: "There are certain writer of the past--Augustine, Calvin, Bengel, Westcott, Schlatter--to whom we shall always turn with gratitude for the timeless insights that are to be found in their writings."
W. Ward Gasque: "It may be that in rediscovering Adolf Schlatter, New Testament scholarship will begin to recover its true faith."
Adolf Schlatter (1852-1938) was a theological professor, writer, pastor, and speaker. He taught theology at Bern, Griefswald, and eventually at Tubingen (1898-1922). Andreas J. Kostenberger is assistant professor of New Testament at Trinity International University. He holds a Ph.D. from Trinity.
