Item description from seller

Large quarto volume in good condition. Green cloth is faded at edges with a slight ripple, and corner wear. Tightly bound and square with a nice bright, unmarked interior. Dust jacket is very good with a slightly dulled surface and slight edgewear with a tiny chip at front bottom flap fold. Voluminous and copiously illustrated history of the game of chess. Originally published in Polish in 1960, this is the first English edition. Several translators worked on the manuscript. Additional chapter by B. H. Wood, who also edited the English text, on Anglo-Saxon aspects of the game. A lively and fascinatingly detailed history. 374 pp. Sports & Recreation, Games, History, Chess.
