Discover how sounds from bodies and the natural world helped shape Celtic words, names, and meaning in Celtic Roots: The Natural Origins of Language.
Explore a provocative look at how language may grow from everyday motion, breath, and the gestures of the landscape. The book presents a fresh view of Celtic words and place names, drawing connections between primal sounds and their meanings, across myth, history, and daily speech. It blends linguistic ideas with cultural storytelling to show language as a living reflection of nature and human experience.
Through careful analysis and lively examples, you’ll see how roots and sounds form the building blocks of speech, and how names of rivers, animals, and places carry forward ancient patterns. The work also considers how different traditions interpret language—contrasting natural origins with more mystical or Cabalistic explanations—and what this might mean for understanding the Celtic linguistic heritage today.
Ideal for readers curious about Celtic studies, historical linguistics, and the links between language, myth, and landscape.
