This short history seeks to set out the formation of a nation with its own state, which played a key role in Europe for centuries. It also explains how this state was attacked for two centuries until its destruction on 11 September 1714 and the subsequent struggle by Catalans to be reborn from their ashes and recover their place in history.

About the Author: Jaume Sobrequés i Callicó (Girona, 1943) és catedràtic emèrit d'història de Catalunya a la UAB, director del Centre d'Història Contemporània de Catalunya i president de la Societat Catalana d'Estudis Històrics (IEC). Ha estat director del Museu d'Història de Catalunya (2000-2008), senador (1977-1982) i diputat al Parlament de Catalunya (1988-1995). Va ser membre de la Comissió dels Vint, que va redactar l'Estatut d'Autonomia del 1979. Ha dirigit la Història de Barcelona (1991-1997). És autor de: La guerra civil catalana del segle xv (1973), en col·laboració amb Santiago Sobrequés i Vidal; Catalunya i l'Estatut d'Autonomia (1976); El pactisme a Catalunya (1982); L'Estatut d'autonomia de Catalunya (1982), en col·laboració amb Sebastià Riera i Viader; Antoni Rovira i Virgili. Història i pensament polític (2002); La fi del silenci. La recuperació de la Generalitat i el retorn de Tarradellas (2002); 1941. Un opositor català durant el franquisme (2005) i és coautor, amb Mercè Morales, de Manual d'autonomia (2003) i La Generalitat a l'exili (2008), i, amb Ramon Sarobe, d'Hug Roger III (2008). Les seves darreres obres són: Estudis d'Història de Catalunya, 2 vol. (2008 i 2010); Orígenes hispanos de California (2010); L'Estatut de la Transició.
