pp. xxiv, 142 with b/w. woodcuts. 8vo. Hardback. TEG. With Publisher s illustrated advertisment sheet for this work (dated Feb. 1839) tipped onto ffep. Two signatures to ffep., the latter dated 1908. Spotting to ends and only occ. internally o/w. contents fine. Half calf and cloth boards good to vg. Unusual to find a copy with the Publisher s advert. An informative book which set out to correct the many mistaken impressions of the native British reptiles and amphibians. Seller Inventory # 67845

Spine rich gilt with five raised bands, floral vignettes and red morocco label with gilt title. Boards with triple-gilt borders and corner pices; gilt-lined edges and inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. = An extravagantly bound copy of a useful and well-illustrated work by the British zoologist Thomas Bell (1792-1880). This is not an uncommon book but we have never seen it in such a wonderful luxurious binding. Some minimal shelf wear; first, second and rear blanks spotted, text pages clean. An excellent copy.
