Item description from seller

12mo, 264pp. Frontispiece portrait of Washington, famous for its uncharitable depiction of his nose as unusually bulbous. As is true of some other examples we've seen, this copy seemingly bound without "The Declaration of Rights, and Constitution of the State of Maryland," which makes up pp. 265-300 in some copies. DEFECTIVE, lacking pp. iii-x (four leaves), which represents the Preface and most of the Contents section. Rebacked to style in contemporary-style bown calf with leather spine label. A few marginal paper repairs, general toning, foxing, and staining, and some contemporary ink markings to the endleaves, including some which bleed through the frontispiece, though not to an obscene degree. Altogether in good condition at best. A reading or reference copy of this important early history of the American Revolution, written in the style of the Bible, which was first published (as "The American Revolution") in 1793. This 1823 edition is generally preferred for its inclusion of the (bizarre) frontispiece. Bartgis, who signs the Preface (remember, not present in this copy!), does not mention Snowden anywhere in the book, and clearly tries to give the impression that he was the author. The Maryland State Archives identify Bartgis as the first printer to set up a permanent operation in the Shenandoah Valley. An incomplete and unlovely copy of an important book, priced accordingly.…

Store description

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.…
