What analogies can be drawn between Blake and such previously neglected figures as William Hamilton Reid and Garnet Terry? How does Blake redeploy conventions of scientific atomism, illustrate the Book of Enoch or handle the discrepancy between commerce and pastoral? Does Blake reflect or challenge eighteenth-century historical or alchemical tradition? What was the status of engraving in the Royal Academy? How has current scholarship defeminized The Book of Thel?
By employing notions of history wider than the purely 'literary', and featuring an important new essay by Iain McCalman, the foremost historian of the subculture of the period, Historicizing Blake represents a significant contribution towards the re-historicizing of Romanticism.
