Item description from seller

This two-volume complete set was initially edited after the author's death from lectures given 1847?1861, and first issued by T. & T. Clark, Edinburgh, 1862?64. Both of these volumes are facsimiles of those 1862 editions, published by The Banner of Truth Trust in 1960.FROM THE DUST JACKET: "The study of the history of theology is of more than academic interest. It throws light on both truth and error. It helps us to recognise old heresies when we meet them in modern dress, and introduces us to the classical elucidations of truth which overthrow them for all time. Preachers cannot afford to neglect this field of study.William Cunningham, (1805-1861) Principal of New College, Edinburgh, from 1847 till his death in 1861, was one of the greatest of Scottish theologians. Proof of his quality appears from the fact that he and Charles Hodge of Princeton each regarded the other as the foremost Reformed divine of their day. With his breadth of learning, depth of evangelical insight, exactness of thought and vigorous stately style, Cunningham was the Warfield -- one might almost say, the Calvin -- of the Free Church of Scotland for the first two decades of his life. Historical Theology is his masterpiece. These lectures cover most of the major doctrinal discussions of Christian history up to Cunningham's day, paying special attention to Romanism, Socinianism (the parent of much modern Liberal teaching), and Arminianism. Everywhere the magisterial quality of the lecturer's mind -- profound, precise, spacious, strong -- in its evidence.'This work,' wrote Dr. John Macleod, 'is like an elaborate and luminous judicial charge by a master of his subject address from the Bench to the jury of Christian students, who may well avail themselves of the judgments of so penetrating and comprehensive a mind.'"PROVENANCE: This book is from the library of Calvin Thielman, pastor for over thirty years to Billy Graham and his family. His personal library stamp is present on the front flyleaves of both volumes.ABOUT THIS SET: Facsimile reprint, fourth edition, published in 1960. Both volumes are bound in matching deep navy blue cloth. Covers are plain with gilt lettering on each spine. Dust jackets are yellow with black lettering and red illustration. Each volume measures 8.5 inches tall x 5.75 inches wide x 1.5 inches thick. On a shelf, this set spans 3.5 inches.- VOLUME I: Contents include: Biographical Introduction, The Church, The Council of Jerusalem, The Apostles' Creed, The Apostolical Fathers, The Heresies of the Apostolic Age, The Fathers of the Second and Third Centuries, The Church of the First Two Centuries, The Constitution of the Church, The Doctrine of the Trinity, The Person of Christ, The Pelagian Controversy, The Worship of Saints and Images, The Civil and Ecclesiastical Authorities, Scholastic Theology, The Canon Law, Witnesses for the Truth During the Middle Ages, The Church at the Era of the Reformation, The Council of Trent, The Doctrine of the Fall, and The Doctrine of the Will. xxxv, 639 pp. - VOLUME II: Contents include: Justification, The Sacramental Principle, The Socinian Controversy, Doctrine of the Atonement, The Arminian Controversy, Church Government, and The Erastian Controversy. Store description

Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville).
