Print on Demand. This book, a captivating culinary collection, ushers readers into the kitchens of the Victorian middle class, where culinary practices mirrored a rapidly changing world. The author reveals the middle class's aspirations, which translated to the dining table as a desire to imitate the upper classes. Within these kitchens, hierarchical tensions arose as servants were expected to maintain high standards while their employers sought to control and economize. Through an analysis of cookbooks, household manuals, and domestic advice literature, the book delves into the social and cultural history of food, offering fresh insights into the complexities of Victorian society. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.
