In the publisher's original cloth binding.new edition.Illustrated with 20 tinted lithographed plates, including a frontispiece, each featuring multiple images. Collated, complete.A late nineteenth-century instructional work on the principles of light, shadow, chiaroscuro, and tonal contrast as applied to landscape painting and drawing.Samuel Prout (1783–1852) was a British watercolourist renowned for his architectural subjects, particularly continental street scenes, and was appointed Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary to both George IV and Queen Victoria. Praised by John Ruskin in 1844, "Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout." In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, sound. Slight cracking to upper portion of joint at front board. slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to cloth. The odd handling mark and scratch to boards. slight fading to spine and extremities. Tide marks to gutters of endpapers. Bookplate of Berkshire County council to front paste down. Hinges cracked, with binding materials partially exposed, slightly loosened but holding. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Tide marking at the gutter to the frontispiece and plates, not affecting the images present on those plates. The odd spot throughout with scattered spotting to first and last few leaves. Good.
