About The Author: Sir Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange (1756–1841) was a British lawyer and chief justice in both Nova Scotia and British India. He served as Chief Justice of Nova Scotia from 1790 to 1797, where he played a pivotal role in freeing enslaved Black Nova Scotians. In 1800, he became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Madras (now Chennai), India. Strange was also an early scholar of Hindu law, publishing works on the subject. He supported educational institutions and made significant contributions to the legal landscape in both Nova Scotia and India. He died in 1841. and John Dawson Mayne (1828–1917) was a distinguished British lawyer and legal expert, renowned for his influential work on the Indian Penal Code and his authoritative book Mayne's Hindu Law. After completing his legal education at Trinity College Dublin, he moved to Madras, India, where he served as a Professor of Law and Advocate-General of Madras.
