Moncreiffe of that Ilk's account of the Clans, their history and heritage, genealogy, relics and homelands, reflects the great and rightful pride which all people of Scots and especially Highland descent feel about their origins, wherever they are now living. The first part of the book traces the development of Highland life and customs from ancient Celtic times up to the present day. Scotland, Sir lain believes, is unique in that for centuries ordinary people have had a feeling of relationship with the head of their clan: Scottish tradition and pride of Name confer upon every clansman what is elsewhere the prerogative of a limited aristocracy alone. There follows an account of the clans individually. Dynastic origins are charted, and Sir lain tells much fascinating and scarcely known history, with information about heraldic badges, war-cries, lucky plants, emblems and symbols of each clan's individuality. In magnificent photographs on every page, in black and white and colour, the homelands of the clans are depicted, together with historic relics and portraits of chiefs and famous clansmen - the desolate mountains of the North in which the hardy Highlanders fought for survival, the forests where the wolf once roamed, the lochs, the grim fortresses, and the stately homes where the chieftains settled in more recent times. `Harsh realism and necromancy, butchery and lyricism, beauty and bleakness . a fascinating book, splendidly produced.'
