The first part of the book traces the development of Highland life and customs from ancient Celtic times up to the present day. Scotland, Sir lain believes, is unique in that for centuries ordinary people have had a feeling of relationship with the head of their clan: Scottish tradition and pride of Name confer upon every clansman what is elsewhere the prerogative of a limited aristocracy alone. There follows an account of the clans individually. Dynastic origins are charted, and Sir lain tells much fascinating and scarcely known history, with information about heraldic badges, war-cries, lucky plants, emblems and symbols of each clan's individuality.
