Print on Demand. This book critically examines the 1850 Papal Bull that initiated the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England, which inflamed anti-Catholic sentiment and created a public furor. The author provides a thorough analysis of the arguments for and against the reestablishment of Catholic dioceses, with special attention to the legal, religious, and political issues involved. The author places the controversy within the broader context of the historical relationship between Catholicism and the Church of England and explores the theological and practical dimensions of the hierarchy's reestablishment. Ultimately, the book highlights the significance of religious tolerance and the enduring power of religious belief in shaping historical events. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Modern History of UK and Ireland
The Hierarchy Question: How England confronted the Catholic hierarchy and the limits of religious freedom examines how England faced the creation of a Catholic hierarchy and what that meant for religious liberty, law, and national identity.
It lays out the key arguments, the legal framework, and the political stakes in clear, accessible terms. This book traces the shift from strict Protestant settlement to a more modern view of toleration. It explains how the question was debated in Parliament, among bishops, and in public discourse, and why those debates mattered for English freedom and international standing. The discussion stays focused on the premise: what the establishment of a Catholic hierarchy would mean for English law, society, and the balance between church and state.
- Learn the core arguments about whether a Catholic hierarchy could exist in England without undermining Protestant foundations.
- See how legal concepts of toleration and religious liberty are defined and tested in this historical moment.
- Explore the role of foreign influence and international law in shaping national policy.
- Understand the practical questions about church authority, governance, and civil rights in a changing Britain.
