In 1984 the book Chloroplast summarized the development, structure, and function of thylakoid membranes in this organelle and the conversion of light energy to sugars by photosynthesis as known at that time. In this book the author, J. Kenneth Hoober, updates his work on the assembly of light-harvesting chlorophyll-protein complexes in chloroplast membranes within the context of his life and career. His early discovery of chemistry in high school, his love of organic chemistry in college, the years in graduate school at the University of Michigan and as a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University and The Rockefeller University, propelled him into a life of academic research at Rutgers University, Temple University and Arizona State University. Not willing to stop research at retirement, he co-founded a biotech company and continued research for another 20 years. He recognizes that—at the end—his final achievements required all his varied research experiences and could not have come together without a team of students and colleagues and at any other place than ASU and Susavion Biosciences. However, along the way, he struggled with the spiritual side of his life, which led to a rich collection of writings of thoughts that emerged from the struggle. He clearly recounts his justification for throwing off the mantle of religion in favor of evidence to the contrary. At the end, Kierkegaard’s encouragement to “will the good” became life’s motto.
