Author’s Note
Artificial intelligence is often described as though it were an independent force arriving from the future. It is better understood as a set of tools designed, financed, purchased, and managed by people and institutions. Its effects will therefore depend not only on what the technology can do, but on who controls it, why it is deployed, and how the resulting gains and losses are distributed.
This book does not claim that AI will eliminate all work or automatically create prosperity. Both promises are too simple. AI can help workers solve problems, reduce dangerous or repetitive tasks, improve access to expertise, and create valuable products. It can also be used to cut payrolls, weaken bargaining power, intensify surveillance, discriminate at scale, and concentrate wealth. The central economic question is not whether AI is good or bad. It is who gains, who pays, and who gets a voice in the transition.
The evidence is developing quickly. Exposure estimates describe tasks that AI may affect; they are not forecasts of layoffs. Employer surveys are expectations, not guarantees. The figures in this book are dated and sourced so readers can distinguish measured results from scenarios and speculation.
