Attractive 1839 edition of the highly influential 18th-century English devotional work first published in two volumes between 1746 and 1747, which blends solemn Christian theology with a poetic appreciation of natural beauty. Small hardback beautifully bound in full black calf with gilt lettering on the spine, all edges of boards and pages gilt, original yellow endpapers (which do not show well in the photographs) . In very good condition, very minor rubbing of ends of spine, edges and corners, owner’s inscription, Mary Frances Lear, dated 1845, some minor foxing to frontispiece, tissue guard, which is detached, title page and final few pages, otherwise bright, tight and clean. This C19th edition includes an introductory Sketch of His Life to provide readers with biographical context on Hervey's brief but pious existence, which is included in the initial xxivpp together with a very detailed list of the contents, then 360pp plus 12pp Scott, Webster & Geary publisher’s catalogue. The main text incorporates both of the C18th volumes, Volume I: Earthly Mortality & Beauty, which includes Mediations among the Tombs, which is considered a cornerstone foundational prose text for the "Graveyard School" of poetry and early Gothic literature, and Volume II: Celestial and Seasonal Wonders.…
