1786. Fourth edition (revised and corrected). xix, [i], 442pp. plus 26 page index. James Harris, FRS (1709-1780) was a famous English politician and grammarian. 'Hermes, a Philosophical Inquiry Concerning Universal Grammar' is his best known work, first published in 1751. Bound in contemporary full leather boards, the book is in need of repair and has several faults. The boards are scuffed and stained with bumping to the corners and some damage and loss to the leather on the corner tips. A large piece of leather is missing from the top rear corner and about 1 12" x 1 3/4" missing from the top rear spine corner. There are some repairs to the leather on the rear board. About 1/2" is missing from the bottom of the spine and about 1 3/4" from the top of the spine. The contents are secure apart from a few of the early signature which are loose. The front free endpaper is missing and there is no half-title page (if published). The title page has probalbly been loose in the past and roughly tipped in. It also has some soiling. There are some marks on some of the first and last dozen or so pages but the remainder are clean, making this a suitable copy for repair. Seller Inventory # Net0711
