Herman the Horrible Trailer Mouse
Once there lived a mouse called Herman. His home was in a woodpile next to a cook shack. Early one spring, someone brought a little travel trailer and parked it by the woodpile. Then the people went away, leaving the trailer. Herman was curious and, after weeks of sniffing around, he found a way into the trailer! It was magnificent! It was large, from a mouse's point of view, and filled with treats of all description. Now, Herman was friendly enough but he really made a mess in the trailer and the people who came to vacation there became really angry at him.
One day they drove up in their truck and discovered someone or something had been in the trailer and left behind tiny black pellets everywhere. The lady screamed "Mouse!! Mouse!! While we were gone a mouse got into the trailer and left a horrible mess." The man suggested that they set a trap for the mouse. So, they did. For bait they used yummy Swiss cheese. After a weekend of cleaning up little black pellets, they locked the trailer and drove away for a week hoping their problem had been solved.
The minute they left, Herman came out of his favorite resting place, the coffee pot, and sniffed the air. "Aha," he said. "I smell cheese." He looked around and saw the cheese but he also knew that it was set in a trap. His mouse trap instincts were an inherited talent from his father, George. George had lived to the ripe old mouse age of 100 and had never been caught in a trap! He had taught his son, Herman, well. Now, Herman was teaching his son, Harry, trap evasion techniques also. Herman looked around and he saw a twig lying on the floor. He knew immediately what to do to get the cheese. He took the twig, put it in his mouth, and moved closer to the trap and the cheese prize it held.
SNAP! The trap slammed shut, flipped over and broke the twig in half. Herman calmly strolled over and ate the cheese. Oh, it was sooo good!!! There was also a big bag of dry dog food. He and Harry chewed a hole in the bag and called all their cousins to come for a feast.
Scattering little black pellets everywhere, they took pieces of the dog food and chewed the edges to make it a size easier to carry and then hid the dog food for future use. Some went in the tube of the paper towels. Some went on the curtain rod covers. Some went in the storage area above the bed and were hidden in the nice clean sheets and blankets. Some, of course, went in the mice and they had plenty in their tummies to make more and more of the nasty black pellets.
All of a sudden, they heard footsteps approaching the trailer! Then, they heard the click of a key opening the door. They knew they had to get out of sight quickly but their tummies were so full they couldn't move as fast as they needed to. Harry, being younger and more agile, quickly escaped through a hole in the floor but Herman, being older and arthritic could not move fast enough to make the same escape. What to do and where to hide was his problem.
