Although its front is mostly composed of fixed metal parts, Herbie is limitedly able to bend and reposition , allowing you to return your very expressive face (or expressionless at appropriate times ) . It is a serious contender in motor racing competitions . Herbie is distinguished by its creamy yellow , with three stripes of red, white and blue colors that flow through it from front to back and number " 53 " painted on the front doors and engine cover. In some Latin American countries it was known as Herbie Love Bug ... born in Ejido , with black color sunroof California OFP plate 857. By action of the movies , Herbie is equipped with an engine Porsche 356. The car is named to an expert mechanic named Tennessee Steinmetz ( Buddy Hackett ) in " the Love Bug " by his uncle "Herb " which was a middleweight boxer . His uncle had a broken nose and reminded the front of a Volkswagen Beetle. The "53" logo was chosen because pitcher Don Drysdale Los Angeles Dodgers, wore that uniform number . ( This was mentioned by a member of the production of the original film, Volkswagen personnel ) . While the cars used in all the movies were an original painted Volkswagen L87 Pearl White , the interiors of cars (all films except for the 2005 version , Herbie : Fully loaded) , were painted in a tone that reflect the gray . This was to prevent glare of studio lights during filming. By 2005, the reflections of the study team could be digitally removed in post- production.
