Is it painting or sculpture, area or room? Hardly any other artistic medium challenges our vision as the relief. Especially its indeterminacy has always made it particularly attractive for numerous artists. This volume illuminates the variations of relief from 1800 to the 1960s using outstanding work by artists such as Bertel Thorvaldsen, Jules Dalou, Auguste Rodin, Medardo Rosso, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Archipenko, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Hans Arp, Kurt Schwitters, Osk, Oar Schlemmer, Lucio Fontana, Louise Nevelson or Lee Bontecou.
Over the course of more than 150 years, interest grew to overcome the traditional genre boundaries of art. Painters created sculptures, sculptors approached painting. The relief became a playing field for experiments on which new forms, materials and techniques could be tested. Its social and political significance also expanded: in the course of radical changes in the early 20th century, the relief became a space of utopia and departure into a new world.
In 13 chapters, this book explores the possibilities and limits of relief art beyond historical development lines or stylistic order systems - and offers numerous discoveries and surprises.
