Discover how one king’s bold legal reforms changed England—and a continent’s—approach to justice, governance, and power.
Henry II earned a lasting reputation as a reforming monarch who sought to bring church law, local courts, and noble influence under the crown’s reach. This book traces his decisive moves, from codifying royal authority to shaping how judges and sheriffs operated across his realm and beyond. It highlights the clashes, compromises, and political wyles that defined his reign and set the stage for later constitutional development.
Through vivid narrative, the book shows how reforming energy and strategic diplomacy stretched across England and the Continent, affecting the balance of power among church, state, and the nobility. It explains the political consequences of his efforts and the enduring questions they raised about law, order, and royal prerogative.
- How the Assize of Clarendon and related reforms redefined the administration of justice
- Henry II’s use of royal authority to bring rival jurisdictions under the crown
- The political struggle with the church and key figures of his era
- Connections between his legal program and later milestones in English governance
Ideal for readers of medieval history, governance, and legal reform, this edition sheds light on one of England’s most influential yet controversial rulers.
