Vintage Penguin. #1086. Hemlock and After by Angus Wilson, in its Penguin edition, is one of his most penetrating and morally complex novels. It centres on Bernard Sands, a liberal critic and would-be reformer whose plans to establish a writers’ colony are derailed by scandal, hypocrisy and the uncomfortable truths of his own life. Wilson dissects the post-war cultural world with cool precision: the brittle idealism, the evasions around sexuality, and the uneasy gap between public virtue and private behaviour.
