This book provides a framework for the assessment of children′s behavior difficulties. The author considers a range of theories and demonstrates that after careful assessment to screen out other causes of disturbed behavior, much benefit can derive from the application of the principles of social learning theory. The innovative perspective provides practical suggestions for overcoming aggressiveness, disruptiveness, withdrawn behavior, and eating or sleeping difficulties.

The alarming number of troubled children and the distress and exasperation these children pose to their families and those around them are areas of deep concern. Research suggests that approximately one in ten children aged 10 years in urban settings, and one in 12?13 of those in rural settings, display serious disorders of behaviour. Many are vulnerable to becoming involved in the Juvenile Justice System, and a significant proportion move into the Adult Criminal System. Helping Families with Troubled Children acknowledges the extent of the problem and examines some of the pre–disposing factors leading to children?s difficulties. It stresses the importance of attempting to work with families before difficult behaviour becomes entrenched and resistant to intervention, preferably at or before the age of 2 years. Drawing on humanistic and cognitive behavioural principles, and the latest research findings in a number of areas of children?s difficulties, the author provides a structured approach to intervention and guides practitioners to work supportively with parents. Written to support health visitors, psychologists, social workers, school nurses, and parents, Helping Families with Troubled Children demonstrates how a preventive approach can benefit all concerned. As such, it is essential reading for students on professional courses in health and social welfare, nursing, and psychology.
