You do not have to be finished to be useful.
The Helper Who Is Also Healing is a groundbreaking guide for helpers, clinicians, peer support workers, and community mental health professionals who are still navigating their own healing while showing up for others. Cliffard Mayo, MBA, LAC, brings lived experience, professional insight, and deep reflective wisdom to one of the most unspoken realities in the helping professions: many of the most effective helpers are still in their own process.
This book dismantles the harmful myth that helpers must be fully healed before they can serve. Instead, it offers a clear, honest, and compassionate framework for navigating the tensions that arise when personal history, lived experience, and professional responsibility meet in the same room.
Across twelve powerful chapters, Mayo explores:
• The role of personal history in shaping professional identity
• What happens when a client’s story resonates with your own
• The “double life” of being both helper and person in recovery
• The ethics of healing while helping
• How to manage triggers, boundaries, and self-awareness
• How supervision changes when you have skin in the game
• The gift and burden of lived experience
• Integration, wholeness, and becoming the “whole helper”
This book does not romanticize the experience. It does not minimize the complexity. Instead, it offers grounded guidance, reflective questions, and a deeply human perspective that honors both sides of the helper’s identity.
You are allowed to be both. You can continue healing while helping others...honestly, ethically, and with integrity. This book shows you how.
The Strength Within Collection continues with this essential volume for every helper who has ever recognized their own reflection in the people they serve.
