Christie's, New York, 2001; two volumes, being Part I for Monday 23 April 2001 and Part II for the conclusion of the sale the following day; 4to, 220 x 275mm; pp 449 and 229; profusely illustrated throughout with many illustrations in colour; grey cloth boards, gilt on front boards and spine; in very good, near fine, condition throughout and an extremely useful reference work not only to the items listed but more widely. . . . The appendixes are a bibliography, illustrations from rubbings of binding tools, and indexes including of authors, of 15th century printers and publishers, and of provenance including binders, scribes and illuminators. Friedlaender had fled Switzerland for the US in 1936, duly becoming an investment banker in New York. He was a serious and knowledgeable book and manuscript collector with a focus on incunabula and early printing in general and on illuminated manuscripts while not neglecting works by later European authors. . . .
