Paperback. The Israelites left Egypt carrying gold. Lots of it. So where did it go?In Hebrew Gold, Dr. David Powers follows a trail of wealth that begins with one of the Bible's most famous events. As the Hebrews fled Egypt during the Exodus, they carried away silver, gold, clothing, and other valuables given to them by the Egyptians. That treasure did not simply disappear into the wilderness. Some became the Golden Calf. Some was freely offered to build the Tabernacle and its sacred furnishings. More wealth entered Israel through conquest, tribute, offerings, and trade. Along the way, fortunes were lost to rebellion, war, foreign kings, invading armies, and disastrous political decisions. The trail leads through Sinai, Jericho, Shiloh, the age of the Judges, David's conquests, Solomon's astonishing wealth, the divided kingdom, Assyrian invasion, Babylonian exile, the Second Temple, and finally the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.Drawing from Scripture, history, and archaeology, Powers approaches the mystery as an amateur investigator following an ancient treasure trail. He also explores questions the biblical text leaves tantalizingly unanswered. Why did Shiloh survive centuries of chaos? What became of the Ark of the Covenant? How much of Israel's wealth came from its own land? Could any of the treasure carried out of Egypt have survived into later generations? This is biblical history with a treasure hunter's curiosity.Part Bible study, part historical investigation, and part amateur archaeology, Hebrew Gold follows more than a thousand years of wealth gained, given, stolen, hidden, returned, and lost. The Bible tells us where the gold began.Hebrew Gold follows where the trail leads. About the author-Dr. David Powers is an adventurer, philosopher, and pioneer and lives a life of constant experimentation. His life's compass is "to seek out adventure in everything he does by being intentional, determined, and unstoppable and by energizing and outfitting others to embark on their own adventures". In Hebrew Gold, Dr. David Powers follows a trail of wealth that begins with one of the Bible’s most famous events.
The trail leads through Sinai, Jericho, Shiloh, the age of the Judges, David’s conquests, Solomon’s astonishing wealth, the divided kingdom, Assyrian invasion, Babylonian exile, the Second Temple, and finally the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.
Drawing from Scripture, history, and archaeology, Powers approaches the mystery as an amateur investigator following an ancient treasure trail. He also explores questions the biblical text leaves tantalizingly unanswered. Why did Shiloh survive centuries of chaos? What became of the Ark of the Covenant? How much of Israel’s wealth came from its own land? Could any of the treasure carried out of Egypt have survived into later generations?
This is biblical history with a treasure hunter’s curiosity.
Part Bible study, part historical investigation, and part amateur archaeology, Hebrew Gold follows more than a thousand years of wealth gained, given, stolen, hidden, returned, and lost.
The Bible tells us where the gold began.
Hebrew Gold follows where the trail leads.
