An in-depth regional discussion of heavy metal music, Heavy Metal Music in Argentina explores metal music as a catalyst for social change and site for engaging political reflection. Originally published in Spanish and sold locally in Argentina, this is the first time the work has been available in English.
Edited by leading researchers, this collection addresses the music’s rituals, circulations, cultural products, lyrics and allows readers to rethink the place of heavy metal within Argentinean politics and economics. Exclusively written by members of the Group for Interdisciplinary Research on Argentinian Heavy Metal (GIIHMA) in a communal approach to scholarship, the book echoes the working-class voices that marked early post-dictatorship metal music in Argentina.
This is the first collection of essays on Argentine metal music. It has opened up research channels between different universities in the country while also engaging a non-academic audience, and widening the potential market for the book.
The book makes an interdisciplinary examination of a complex and fascinating object: it allows for the examination, discussion and analysis of its nationalist postulates, relationship with the Creole culture (for example, with nineteenth-century ‘gauchesca’ literature), indigenism, and with the political processes of contemporary Argentina.
Metal Music Studies, as an academic area of inquiry, has focused mostly on the music’s cultural components in Europe and the United States. The few books that have addressed metal music as a global phenomenon, have severely neglected the inclusion of Latin American countries. Argentina, with the largest and oldest metal scene in the region, has also been neglected in the existing literature. There is a growing interest in this area, as demonstrated by the emergence of documentary film on metal music in Latin America.
The book has potential use as a resource on courses in several disciplines including sociology, cultural studies, musicology, ethnomusicology, sociology and Latin American studies. It will also be of interest to the more general readers with an interest in the musical genre.

Dr Nelson Varas-Díaz is a social-community psychologist and a professor in the Department of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University. His current research examines the role of extremity in society through the lenses of health and illness, natural and human-made disasters, and communal cultural practices. His research, funded by the National Institutes of Health, focuses on documenting: (1) physician migration and its impact on healthcare systems in disaster-affected contexts, (2) the role of energy independence through solar panels in managing chronic diseases within marginalized communities and (3) communal acupuncture as a collective health-sustaining strategy. This work is summarized in his numerous articles published in journals such as Social Science & Medicine and Global Public Health, his recent book On Extremity: From Music to Images, Words, and Experiences (Lexington, 2023) and his forthcoming book The Ethics of Extremity: On Hearing, Seeing, and Feeling Each Other (Lexington, 2025). In addition to his health-related research, Dr Varas-Díaz investigates the concept of extremity in culture, particularly in relation to music and the arts. His recent publications in this area include Seeing Metal Music in Latin America and the Caribbean (Lexington, 2024) and The Bad Bunny Enigma: Culture, Resistance, and Uncertainty (Lexington, 2025).

Daniel Nevárez Araújo is assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Puerto Rico – Río Piedras. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. He has published work in a wide array of topics, including disability studies, AIDS/HIV literature and film, comedy, documentary film, immigration, identity and heavy metal music in publications such as Hispanic Issues, The Journal of Fandom Studies, The Massachusetts Review, Trespassing Journal, Sargasso and Metal Music Studies. He has co-edited the books Heavy Metal Music in Argentina: In Black We Are Seen (Intellect, 2020), Heavy Metal in Latin America: Perspectives from the Distorted South (Lexington, 2021), Defiant Sounds: Heavy Metal Music in the Global South (Lexington, 2023) and The Bad Bunny Enigma: Culture, Resistance, and Uncertainty (Lexington, 2025). He co-authored the book Seeing Metal Music in Latin America and the Caribbean (Lexington, 2024). He has also co-edited various Special Issues for the Metal Music Studies journal, published by Intellect Books.
