About this title

“Heartstrings” takes us on a tender and sometimes magical journey as a boy learns about the Special Olympics and trains to compete for the first time. With support from his loving mother and grandfather, Billy is able to overcome obstacles at home, at school, and on the field of competition. This story is designed to be both entertaining and to help early readers better understand and accept people with intellectual and physical differences.

About the Author:

My wife and I were youth directors at our church in Louisiana for ten years and had the pleasure of working with and developing programs for hundreds of young people. Immediately after volunteering to become youth directors in 1979, we took approximately fifty teenagers to the Bayouland Area Special Olympics track and field events. As volunteers, we helped in every way we could and I can say without hesitation that volunteering at the Special Olympics truly changed my life. We started a clown ministry and taught our young people make-up techniques, costume design, communication skills, and simple entertainment techniques such as juggling and pocket magic. Although our clown ministry was involved in area and state level Special Olympic events for over ten years, our greatest accomplishment was being invited to attend the 1983 International Special Olympic Summer Games at Louisiana State University. We led by example and in more colorful times; I was SoSo the clown as mentioned in this book. Although the term “so so” generally means mediocre or just okay, I choice the clown name SoSo after mentioning to my wife that I needed a name which indicated that I was a “Servant of Special Olympics.” Over the last thirty years, I have also been designing and building special handcrafted wooden coordination games and activities for abled and differently abled young people. These adaptive games are designed to help develop hand-eye coordination, motor skills, color/shape recognition, visual tracking and more. They are challenging, but achievable and I estimate that through the years, several hundred thousand children, young people, and adults have enjoyed my games. My games have entertained young people at countless Special Olympic events, the New Orleans Children’s Hospital and in celebration events for cancer survivors, summer camps for sick children, church fairs, school fairs, corporate picnics, pre-schools, and even elderly care centers. These games have wonderful appeal to young and old alike. (See the games at
