Paperback. Peter Schmidt is a rising star at the Baltimore City Dispensary until something happens that makes him rethink his life's work and return home to offer much needed care to the residents of North County. Having Bernice Peters as his assistant and falling in love with her is not part of his plan. There is no room for love in his life. Love hurts; it complicates things and can cause a pain worse than death itself. He learned that lesson at an early age. Bernice's mother has left for Europe for a few months, leaving Bernice behind on the condition that she become engaged to a man who could never love her the way she desires. During her mother's absence she is given a chance to use her knowledge of herbal cures as Doctor Schmidt's assistant in his medical practice, but their mutual attraction causes a problem. Falling in love with a brooding doctor will neither meet her mother's expectations nor allow her the freedom to heal those who need her help. She doesn't want a marriage of convenience with no real love. That is all he has to offer, and that is no better than the type of marriage her mother wishes for her.Peter and Bernice must work to heal the illnesses of both mind and heart in their patients and themselves.
