The Heartbeat Model is a practical, human-centered guide for leading projects, teams, and organizational change in an increasingly AI-enabled world.
For decades, project management has focused on schedules, budgets, deliverables, and methodologies. While these tools remain important, many projects still struggle because success ultimately depends on people. Teams lose trust, customers feel unheard, leaders become disconnected, and processes become rigid. The result is a project that may appear healthy on paper while quietly losing its pulse.
The Heartbeat Model offers a different approach.
Created by Alice Cuthbertson, MSc, PMP, CSM, this framework helps leaders balance four essential elements of successful work: You, the Customer, People, and Process. Together, these interconnected dimensions form the heartbeat of every project, program, product, initiative, and transformation effort.
Drawing upon decades of experience in project leadership, enterprise transformation, technology programs, and organizational change, Cuthbertson introduces a model that places human connection, trust, empathy, communication, and adaptability at the center of project success.
Inside this handbook, readers will discover:
• The Heartbeat Model framework and how to apply it to projects of any size
• Practical leadership tools for improving self-awareness, decision-making, and accountability
• Strategies for building trust, strengthening teams, and improving collaboration
• Methods for understanding customer needs and creating meaningful stakeholder engagement
• Techniques for creating adaptable processes that support innovation rather than restrict it
• Guidance for integrating artificial intelligence into project environments while maintaining a human-centered focus
• Reflection exercises, project health assessments, meeting agendas, worksheets, and planning tools
• Memorable "Tales from the Nest" stories that bring key concepts to life through real-world lessons and practical examples
As organizations embrace digital transformation and AI-powered technologies, leaders face a new challenge: helping people adapt to change while preserving trust, purpose, and alignment. The Heartbeat Model explores how project teams can collaborate effectively with AI, leverage emerging technologies responsibly, and navigate the human side of transformation.
Rather than viewing project management as a rigid checklist, this book encourages readers to think of projects as living systems. Just as a healthy heartbeat sustains life, healthy leadership, strong relationships, effective processes, and customer connection sustain successful projects.
Whether you are a project manager, program manager, product manager, scrum master, consultant, entrepreneur, executive leader, student, change manager, or accidental project lead, The Heartbeat Model provides practical tools and insights that can be applied immediately.
This book is especially valuable for organizations seeking to improve project outcomes, strengthen collaboration, enhance leadership effectiveness, support AI adoption, and create cultures that embrace continuous learning and innovation.
The Heartbeat Model is more than a project management handbook. It is a framework for leading people, navigating change, and creating sustainable success in a world where technology continues to evolve but human connection remains essential.
Lead with heart. Keep the pulse strong. Build projects, teams, and organizations that are ready to take flight.
