Print on Demand. This Victorian romance tells the story of May Trent and Percy Anstruther, a young couple in 19th-century India. When Percival's marriage proposal is accepted, May's misgivings surface. Despite fearing a loveless existence, she adheres to societal expectations and the perceived duty of marrying. Yet, as their wedding approaches, May grapples with her conflicting feelings. Through the perspectives of May and other characters, the author explores themes of marriage, duty, love, and women's societal roles in the British colonial era. Ultimately, this book offers insightful commentary on the complexities of relationships, class, and the quest for personal fulfillment amidst societal constraints. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

The evening became more beautiful when the soft bright glow that only sunset gives shone on the Simla pines and the barren summits of the more distant hills, While the cicalas shrieked in the trees, making the air hum and simmer with sound. Riding slowly along a narrow road, one of the least frequented in Simla, were a girl and a young man, in earnest talk. The girl was pretty, though at that moment she hardly looked so, for her face was flushed and her mouth worked nervously; her companion, a small man with neat insignificant features, was leaning towards her, and speaking in a low voice.
