Item description from seller

Print on Demand. This book is a study of housing conditions in Saint Paul, Minnesota, carried out in 1917, and an analysis of the findings in the context of pre-existing legislation and resources available at the time. The study was conducted by the Wilder Charity and the Housing Commission of the Saint Paul Association, and the results were published and presented to the city with the intent of improving the overall health of the population by addressing housing concerns. The authors found that while the city of Saint Paul was fortunate in having a relatively low infant mortality rate and a generally healthy overall population, there was room for improvement in preventing the spread of communicable diseases such as scarlet fever, diphtheria, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis. The authors suggest that this could be accomplished by focusing on eliminating overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in housing throughout the city. The book concludes by making several recommendations for specific improvements to city ordinances and enforcement, and calling on the city to invest in the health of its citizens through these measures. This book illustrates that the health of a population relies upon a complex interplay of factors including access to safe and sanitary housing, and preventive health measures. Its findings remain relevant today and should be considered by any community seeking to advance its public health initiatives. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
