Hardcover; missing backstrip. Includes issues from January 1, 1898 through December 31, 1898 all bound together (Vol XL, II No 2141 through Vol XLII, No. 2193). All issue covers bound-in. Articles and photos of the news of the day - including: many on the Spanish-American War, Klondike Gold Rush; Trans-Mississippi Exposition; etc; etc. Many full and double-page illustrations, including: one double-page Frederic Remington (US Cavalry) ; one double-page A. B. Frost (golf) ; one double-page 9th U. S. Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers charging at San Juan) ; a double-page color illustration by Howard Pyle; many Naval/Ships; etc. There is a color double page illustration of US Naval uniforms, plus a color illustration of US military uniforms with color maps related to the Spanish-American War. There are color illustrations in one issue along with "The Great Staircase", a Christmas story by Frank Stockton. Many illustrated ads - some full page. Shaken. The rear board, and the last two issues are detached, but present. Backstrip missing. There is wear at the board corners & edges. Some surface rubbing. There are taped horizontal tears across the cover page of two issues (July 16 and July 22). A long closed tear to one page of the Sept 24 issue. One leaf may be missing at the end of the Dec 24 issue, as there is a 2-page gap in the page numbers; although the issue appears to be complete. Short closed tears at the margin edges of just a couple pages. Some age-darkening to the page edges and first & last few pages. Else the pages are mostly clean.
