In 2001, the Asham Literary Trust organized the third bi-annual competition of short stories by women in honour of Asham House, the house in Sussex where Virginia and Leonard Woolf lived. The competiton attracted over nine hundred entries of which the judges selected 12 which are published here together with commissioned stories by Louise Doughty, Patricia Duncker, A.L. Kennedy, Elena Lappin, Kate Pullinger and Carol Shields. The result is a collection of stories that successfully blends the work of established writers with new authors and taken together represents the very best of contemporary short story writing. Carole Buchan is the administrator of the Asham Literary Endowment Trust in Lewes, East Sussex.
Kate Pullinger's novels include The Last Time I Saw Jane, Weird Sister and Where Does Kissing End.

Kate Pullinger was born in Canada, and moved to London in 1982 where she still lives. She is the author of Tiny Lies, a collection of short stories, and the novels When the Monster Dies and Weird Sister. She collaborated with Jane Campion on the novel of the film The Piano, and has written for film, television and radio. She is currently lecturer in Creative Writing and New Media at De Montfort University.

Patricia Duncker was born in the West Indies. Hallucinating Foucault, her first novel, won the 1997 Dillons First Fiction Award. She is the author of Monsieur Shoushana's Lemon Trees, a collection of short stories, and James Miranda Barry.
