Add to basketLittle Grey Rabbit is one of the classic gems of children’s literature. The series is being relaunched to tie in with a classic television adaptation, and will delight children as much today as when it was first published seventy years ago.
Little Grey Rabbit lives with Squirrel and Hare in a little house on the edge of a wood. It’s March, and Hare is feeling as mad as only a March Hare can feel. So off he dashes into the village to see what he can find. There are untold delights – jars of sweets, dolls, and wooden horses, but best of all, eggs made of chocolate with sugar flowers and ribbons tied round them. Hare decides to surprise his friends on Easter morning with these wonderful things! When he does, his cleverness is greatly admired – but then Hare has always known just how clever he is!
AGE 4-8
LITTLE GREY RABBIT lives with Squirrel and Hare in a little house on the edge of a wood. One morning in March, Hare was feeling as mad as a hare should feel. He decided to go to the village just to see what there was to be seen and there he found untold joys: jars of sweets, dolls and toy horses, but best of all, chocolate eggs with sugary flowers and ribbons tied round them in blue pink and yellow bows.
A wonderful idea came to Hare, a secret for none of his friends to know until Easter morning. With a little help from Moldy Warp and an admiring tabby cat, Hare unveils his great surprise when all of the friends come to the party.
Everyone proclaims Hare to be so clever, but then, he'd known that all along.
ALISON UTTLEY'S Little Grey Rabbit stories have been enjoyed by children for over seventy years. Her sharply observant eye, wonderful wit and pure enjoyment of the cosy never fail to delight. It is a testament to both her and Margaret Tempest;s skill that these classic stories are as appealing today as ever.
Where little Grey Rabbit, Squirrel and Hare live, water does not come out of a tap and there is no electricity. Every morning when Grey Rabbit wakes up, she fills her kettle from the stream just beyond the garden, lights the fire, and makes the tea from daisyheads in a little brown teapot. Then she calls Squirrel and Hare down to their breakfast of lettuce, leaves, nuts and fresh milk.
ALISON UTTLEY'S love of country life – gathering spring flowers, picknicking in summer meadows and skating on frozen ponds – comes through vividly in her stories.
She wrote about her characters, "Why do children love them? Because I believe in them," and it is easy to imagine that if one looked hard enough, one might just find the Little Grey Rabbit, quick Squirrel, bold, careless Hare, kind Moldy Warp the Mole and little Fuzzypeg the Hedgehog all going about their business.
MARGARET TEMPEST'S beautiful watercolours perfectly capture this world. She illustrated the very little Grey Rabbit Story, and her partnership with Alison Uttley continued for forty years.
