The book that has helped readers in 16 languages around the world stop procrastinating and finally do the work that matters.
With over 900 reader reviews and translated into 16 languages, Do the Hard Things First has become one of the most trusted systems for overcoming procrastination, building discipline, and taking consistent action on what matters most.
You know what you need to do. You're not lazy — you're stuck. Stuck in a loop of delay, avoidance, and the quiet regret that comes from watching your goals stay out of reach while easier tasks fill your day.
Most productivity books tell you to work smarter. This one teaches you to do the hard thing first — before resistance sets in, before distractions win, before another day disappears.
Inside, you'll discover:
-
Why your brain is wired to avoid difficult work — and the exact method to rewire it for consistent action
-
How to identify and close your "open loops" so unfinished tasks stop draining your focus
-
The 5-minute rule that breaks resistance and builds unstoppable momentum
-
Psychological tools — including the Premack Principle and temptation bundling — that make hard work feel easier
-
How to create commitment devices that lock in future success before willpower fails
-
A proven daily system to prioritize your most important task and protect it from everything competing for your attention
This book is for you if:
- You've tried other productivity and self-discipline methods but still can't follow through
- You default to easy tasks to feel busy while important work piles up
- You're ready for a clear, actionable system — not motivation, not theory, not fluff
Scott Allan spent three decades trapped in chronic procrastination before developing the system inside this book. Every strategy has been tested in the real world — by him, and by the thousands of readers who have left their stories in these pages.
The hard things won't get easier. But you will.
Do the Hard Things First — because today is the only day that counts.
