Knowledge about an image component is expressed as <x1,y1>/Rn*Dn*Ln*Un*/<x2,y2># where <x1,y1> refers to the coordinates of the starting point; the delimiter* denotes the change in direction; <x2,y2> refers to the coordinates of the end point of the contour component. LAT is used to extract and recognize handwritten single letters and single words from scanned images.
