The dimension of the artistic has so far hardly been the subject of music pedagogical reflection. Nevertheless, as Matthias Handschick and Wolfgang Lessing prove, it is of considerable importance for the initiation and moderation of design processes. Based on four cooperative composition projects at schools, they show how criteria and conceptionalisations of the artistic are struggled and existing ideas change and sharpen in the process. It turns out: As an inner gravitational centre that sustainably shapes music pedagogical action, the artistic can hardly be replaced by alternative constructs – even where it escapes a consensus determination.
