DESIGN THE SYSTEM. UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS. MAKE EVERY DECISION COUNT.
When the doors open, there is no second take. Live sound has to work in the real room, for the real audience, with the equipment, time, power, acoustics, and constraints you actually have.
A system can have excellent loudspeakers, powerful amplifiers, and a sophisticated console and still fall short because coverage, gain structure, timing, room behavior, RF coordination, power, or deployment decisions were never understood as one connected system. The challenge is not simply knowing what each piece of equipment does. It is understanding why it behaves the way it does, how every stage affects the next, and how to recognize problems before they become show-day failures.
HANDBOOK OF SOUND REINFORCEMENT bridges that gap with a practical, engineering-based approach to professional live audio. Beginning with wave physics and room acoustics, it follows the complete path from microphones and signal flow to loudspeakers, arrays, amplification, processing, measurement, monitoring, electrical infrastructure, rigging considerations, and complete system deployment.
WHAT THIS HANDBOOK HELPS YOU DO
-
Understand frequency, wavelength, phase, decibels, sound propagation, reflections, room modes, reverberation, and critical distance—and see how they affect real venues.
-
Evaluate loudspeaker drivers, horn loading, point-source systems, line arrays, coverage patterns, array interaction, subwoofers, and delay systems.
-
Build SPL budgets, map coverage, determine mounting height and aim angles, and recognize problematic underlap and excessive overlap.
-
Develop a practical understanding of amplifier power, impedance, headroom, gain structure, balanced signals, digital audio networking, latency, and redundancy.
-
Work through console routing, EQ, dynamics, microphone techniques, wireless systems, RF coordination, wedge monitors, and in-ear monitoring.
-
Understand system measurement and tuning through RTA, dual-channel FFT concepts, magnitude, phase, coherence, time alignment, spatial averaging, and verification.
-
Approach power distribution, grounding, hearing exposure, rigging, outdoor deployment, documentation, and troubleshooting with the safety awareness professional work requires.
MORE THAN THEORY
The handbook is designed to remain useful after you understand the fundamentals. Concepts are developed from first principles and supported by worked calculations with real units, practical field examples, common-mistake guidance, troubleshooting references, Field Checklists, and Quick Reference sections built for fast consultation.
Complete case studies show how the individual disciplines come together in actual system-design situations—from corporate events and concert halls to large touring festival deployments.
WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR?
This handbook is especially suited to aspiring and working system engineers, FOH engineers, monitor engineers, live-sound technicians, AV professionals, audio students, venue technicians, house-of-worship audio teams, and serious learners who want to understand the engineering behind dependable live systems rather than simply memorize settings.
Whether you are learning why a system behaves the way it does, preparing a venue, troubleshooting a signal path, planning loudspeaker coverage, tuning a deployed system, or developing deeper professional knowledge, this handbook gives you a connected framework for thinking from source to loudspeaker—and from loudspeaker to every seat in the audience.
Get your copy of HANDBOOK OF SOUND REINFORCEMENT and start thinking beyond the controls—start thinking like a system engineer.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book.
