Design school teaches drawing, structure, and theory. It does not teach how to price a project so the fee still covers the work in month nine. It does not teach which clause in an owner-drafted agreement quietly moves the contractor's risk onto your firm. It does not teach what a licensing board does when a complaint arrives, or what a professional liability carrier now wants to know about how your staff used software to produce a drawing set.
That gap is expensive, and because architectural practice is regulated state by state, the answer that was right on the last project can be wrong on the next one across a state line.
This handbook closes that gap in one place, written for the firm most architects actually run: small, often a single practitioner, usually without a business manager or in-house counsel.
What you will be able to do
- Derive a fee from a staffing plan and hours instead of a percentage guess, and know which fee structure carries the risk
- Calculate overhead rate, break-even rate, net multiplier, and utilization for your own firm, and read what they say together
- Build a cash-flow projection and recognise the signals that precede financial distress
- Read an owner-architect agreement provision by provision, and spot the risk-transfer language in an owner-drafted contract
- Run submittals, requests for information, certifications, changes, claims, and completion without assuming the contractor's liability
- Assess a project's compliance obligations, including building performance standards affecting existing buildings
- Write an artificial intelligence policy that supports insurability, and draft the contract language standard forms do not yet provide
Licensure, sealing, and multi-state practice. Standard of care and professional ethics. Building codes, accessibility, life safety, energy, and the current compliance landscape. Firm formation, ownership, and succession. Financial management. Fees and negotiation. Staffing and compensation. Marketing and client selection. Contract fundamentals and the major standard document families. Owner-architect, consultant, and owner-drafted agreements. Project delivery and procurement. Project management. Construction contract administration. Professional liability, claims, and dispute resolution. Artificial intelligence in practice. Practising through an industry contraction.
Eighteen chapters, each with learning objectives, worked examples, decision tools, summaries, and practice problems, plus seven appendices, a glossary, and an index built to be consulted directly. Material that is jurisdiction-specific or time-sensitive is flagged and pointed to its primary source rather than stated as settled fact.
Written for firm principals and sole practitioners, project architects and managers, emerging professionals working toward licensure, and students of professional practice.
Open this handbook and begin running the business, contract, and liability side of your practice with the same rigour you already bring to the design.
