we would thank thee for all
the bright things of life. Help us
to see them, and to count them, and
to remember them, that our lives
may flow in ceaseless praise;
for the sake of Jesus Christ our lord.
Reverend John Henry Jowett (1846-1923)
Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from thy
ways like lost sheep. We have followed
too much the devices and desires of
our own hearts. We have offended
against thy holy laws. We have left
undone those things which we ought
to have done, and we ought not to have
done, and there is no health in us. But
thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us
miserable offenders. Spare thou them
O God, which confess their faults.
Restore thou them that are penitent,
according to thy promises declared
unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord.
And grant, O Most merciful Father, for
his sake, that we may hereafter live a
godly, righteous, and sober life, to the
glory of thy holy name.
Book of Common Prayer, 1662
Almighty and most merciful God, who
hast given us a new commandment that
we should love one another, give us also
grace that we may fulfil it. Make us gentle,
courteous, and forbearing. Direct our lives
so that we may look to the good of others
in word and deed. And hallow all our
friendships by the blessings of thy spirit;
for his sake who loved us and gave himself
for us, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Bishop Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1901)
