19th-Century Hand-Coloured Jousting Scene: Armoured Knight and Striped Caparisoned Horse This remarkable original hand-coloured lithograph, produced in 1842, is drawn from the esteemed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, published by Carl Hoffmann in Stuttgart. Under the artistic direction of Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and the historical expertise of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, the work aimed to authentically portray the customs, costumes, and grand ceremonies of Europe's chivalric age. In this particular scene, the intense moment of a joust is frozen in time. One knight, fully clad in articulated plate armor, is poised on a horse decorated in white caparison adorned with finely rendered birds, suggesting heraldic or symbolic significance. His lance, still held at the ready, points towards an adversary whose vibrant striped barding and elaborate plumes now lie collapsed on the tournament ground. The combination of bold colours?vivid reds, greens, yellows, and blues?applied by hand with meticulous care, conjures the spectacle and pageantry of a knightly encounter. The condition of this lithograph is good, bearing only minor age-related toning and a gentle crease or two. Such authentic details affirm its 19th-century origin without detracting from the crispness of the image or the remarkable intensity of its colours. This piece will appeal to collectors and enthusiasts of medieval history, equestrian art, and historical costume. Adding this print to your collection not only offers a connection to the romanticized world of knights and tournaments, but also provides a stunning conversation piece that encapsulates the artistry and heritage of European chivalry.…
