From The National Portrait Gallery of Distinguished Americans; 6" X 4"; 1 pages; Excellent 19th Century steel engraved portrait of Gilbert Charles Stuart engraved by Asher Brown Durand from Sarah Goodrich's original Miniature Portrait of Gilbert Charles Stuart, Painter of George Washington's Portrait. Image measures 6" X 4" (14" x 11" matted). Clean sharp nicely colored image, matted in white stock with clear mylar. Gilbert Charles Stuart (1755 â€" 1828) was an American painter from Rhode Island considered one of America's foremost portrait painters. He is best known work for his unfinished portrait of George Washington, sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, begun in 1796 and never finished. It is the iconic image of the first President of the United States.
