Early editions of Hamilton's Catechism of the organ provide a key insight into the way that organs in Britain were changing in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The second edition of 1842 'revised, corrected and enlarged, with an historical introduction and a list of the principal metropolitan, country and foreign organs' contains a 24-page appendix of pedal exercises that show how the 'German pedals' were gaining ground at this time. This copy has original brown covers with pasted on title label. The ffe and title page are detached and the binding is somewhat loose.
