The Complete Ham Radio Antenna Build Guide - Volume 2: HF Vertical & Beam Antennas - Hardcover
If Volume 1 taught you how to string wire between two trees, Volume 2 takes you into the world of antennas that stand up, point in a direction, and put real gain behind your signal. This is the volume for operators ready to move beyond the simple dipole and start building verticals, beams, and arrays that punch through when band conditions get tough.
Verticals are where this volume begins, and it treats them with the depth they deserve. You'll learn the real difference between a ground-mounted vertical and an elevated one, why radial systems matter as much as the vertical element itself, and how many radials you actually need before you hit the point of diminishing returns. Ground conductivity, counterpoise design, and the tradeoffs between a quarter-wave vertical and a shortened, loaded design are all covered with the same construction-first approach as Volume 1 - real dimensions, real materials lists, and a tuning process you can actually follow with a NanoVNA in your hand.
From there, the book moves into loading techniques. Traps and loading coils are two of the most misunderstood components in amateur antenna building, and this volume breaks down exactly how each one works, when to use a trap versus a continuously loaded design, and how to wind, measure, and install a loading coil that actually resonates where you expect it to. If you've ever wondered why your multiband trap vertical seems to favor one band over another, this section explains the tradeoffs you're actually making every time you add a trap to a design.
The second half of the book is where things get directional. You'll build Yagi antennas from the ground up - understanding driven elements, directors, reflectors, and the spacing decisions that turn a pile of aluminum tubing into real forward gain and front-to-back ratio. Moxon antennas get dedicated coverage as a compact, high-performance alternative for operators who don't have room for a full-size Yagi boom, with construction details that make this often-overlooked design approachable for a weekend build. Quad antennas round out the beam section, covering both the theoretical differences between a quad and a Yagi and the practical construction techniques - spreaders, wire loops, and matching - that make a quad a genuinely competitive choice for many stations.
Every design in this book follows the same structure that made Volume 1 a practical reference and not just a theory text: a clear explanation of how and why the antenna works, a complete materials list, step-by-step construction instructions, and a tuning and SWR verification process to confirm your build performs the way it's supposed to before you ever key up. Interactive online calculators at hamradiobase.com/ham-radio-antenna-build-guides complement every chapter, letting you plug in your target frequency and get exact dimensions rather than scaling numbers from a table built for a different band.
Whether you're chasing DX with a rotatable Yagi, building a simple ground-mounted vertical for a small lot, or experimenting with phased arrays to squeeze directional performance out of a fixed installation, Volume 2 gives you the theory and the hands-on construction knowledge to build it yourself - and understand exactly why it works once it's up in the air.
