The final part of the anthology focuses on hacking and open-source culture as a social phenomenon, including readings on cultural stereotypes of the hacker, the roles of Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds in the creation of open source software, and an exploration of the maker movement. Hacking and Open Source Culture helps students connect the dots between technological developments of yesterday and our current time and place. It is an ideal text for courses in information studies, computer science, the history of technology, and the cultural influence of technology.

About the Author:

Dave Seng served as the director of the Learning Resource Center at Brookline College for three years. He has taught humanities and critical thinking courses for Brookline College and Concordia University, Irvine. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Arizona, where he teaches courses in hacking and open source culture and digital commerce. He holds an M.A. in humanities from Harrison Middleton University and an MLIS from the University of Arizona, and he is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in philosophy and religion from Harrison Middleton University.
