Item description from seller

264pp ISBN 0231070438 The area known as the Hudson Highlands is a fifteen mile stretch where the Hudson River cuts through the Appalachian mountain chain about fifty miles north of New York City. From either shore, the hills rise up more than 1000 fett, creating a landscape which is both beautiful and mysterious. Although the highlands are a small part of the Hudson Valley region, their role in our nature's culture and heritage has been monumental. Over three centuries, the Highlands have shaped a number of social, cultural, and political movements and they, in turn, have been shaped by these movements. This book was co-sponsored by the Alice and Hamilton Fish Library and the Hudson River Heritage. Chapters partially include: General Washington's Stronghold; West Point: First Stop on the American Tour; Landscape and Dreamscape: Hudson River Painters and Knickerbocker Writers; The Foundry at Cold Spring; Mountain Spa; The Landscape Garden: The Landscapes and Architecture of A. J. Downing; Millionaire's Row; The Great Outdoors: Bear Mountain Park, Conservation, and Social Welfare; Highways, Bridges, and Tunnels; Dynamite, Depression, and Design of Nature; and Storm King. A fascinating look at the area, informative, and one of this bookseller's favorite titles. …
