About this Item

Scarce Goodrich title, and uncommon to be published in Kentucky in the 1840's. Lacking the front board and a makeshift cover has been made out of cardboard and enclosed in a clear plastic covering for the whole book to help hold the new front cover in place. Book itself has considerable aging of the paper stock for the text, but it is clean otherwise. All the contents are present except for the final blank endpaper. Frontispiece illustration is an illustrated title page opposite the printed one, and there is a map of South America preceding the first page of text. Other quaint woodcut illustrations in text. Includes content on pirates and discussion of their hideaway at Tortuga. They are referred to as bucanneers and some of their exploits are described in considerable detail. Much on the then emerging Republics of South America. Contents are tight in the binding and the spine still has its gilt lettering. Spine of brown color appears to be a cloth-like material with blind stamping of the embellishments. Plain gray cloth over the back board. Bookseller Inventory # 1707
