THINK HISTORY IS JUST DATES, KINGS & BATTLES? PLOT TWIST.
History is stranger, smarter, and far more surprising than most textbooks make it sound.
History Has Plot Twists is a fast-paced world history book for kids ages 8–12, packed with 50 strange-but-true 3-minute stories from ancient civilizations to the modern world.
Meet a customer who complained about bad copper nearly 4,000 years ago. Discover how a solar storm helped pinpoint the exact year Vikings were in North America. Meet a fish scientists knew only from fossils—until one turned up on a dock. Find out why Moon-landing software was literally woven by hand, how humans made smallpox disappear, and why scientists deliberately crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid.
And those are only a few of the twists.
This isn't a dry textbook filled with dates to memorize. It isn't a giant pile of random history facts for kids with no explanation, either.
Every short story reveals what happened, why it mattered, and how we know it really happened—using archaeology, documents, artifacts, scientific measurements, museum collections, DNA, tree rings, shipwrecks, recordings, and other real evidence.
Kids get the surprise.
Parents get the substance.
And history finally gets interesting.
INSIDE, YOUNG READERS WILL DISCOVER:
- 50 strange-but-true 3-minute history stories designed for quick, satisfying reading
- World history from ancient cities to space exploration, spanning more than 4,500 years and civilizations across the globe
- Fascinating history facts with real context—not disconnected trivia
- HOW WE KNOW sections showing the evidence historians and scientists actually use
- WHY IT MATTERED explanations that connect each surprising story to the bigger picture
- STUMP AN ADULT questions kids can immediately use to test parents, grandparents, teachers, and unsuspecting grown-ups
- SAME TIME ELSEWHERE spreads showing what different civilizations were doing at the same moment in history
- Engaging illustrations and visual timelines that make complex ideas easier to understand
- A complete WHERE THE EVIDENCE CAME FROM section for curious readers, parents, teachers, and homeschool families
Perfect for curious kids, reluctant readers, history lovers, homeschoolers, classrooms, libraries, road trips, bedtime reading, and screen-free learning.
It also makes a smart educational gift for kids ages 8–12 who love weird facts, ancient civilizations, inventions, science, mysteries, explorers, empires, and stories that make them say:
“Wait… that actually happened?”
OPEN THE BOOK. PICK A PLOT TWIST. SEE HISTORY DIFFERENTLY.
Give your young reader a history book they'll actually want to keep reading—and 50 incredible true stories they'll be waiting to tell someone else.w

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
