Octavo. 121 pp., port. Reprint. In publisher's boards. A very nice copy with only light shelf-rubbing and a bit of sunning at the spine; previous owner gift inscription on the front pastedown. Originally issued in installments in the Huntsville Weekly Independent between 1883 and 1884. Of Taylor and his work, Owen writes, "A native of Madison, being a grandson of an emigrant of 1809 (four years after the first permanent white settlement), a teacher and public official, the writer was eminently qualified for his work. In its preparation he made use of traditions, books, and public records. The style is dignified and philosophical, and the arrangement and method of treatment evidence careful preparation. . . ." Owen p. 1197. The local history remains uncommon even in later 20th century reprints. Brannen 1761. Seller Inventory # 8632
